OYAM DISTRICT

 

OYAM District is situated in northern Uganda between longitudes 32 degrees 2 minutes East and 32 degrees 10 minutes East and latitudes 2 degrees North and 2 degrees 7 minutes North. It is bordered by Gulu District in the North, Pader in the North East, Masindi in the West and Apac from which it was curved in the South.

Oyam covers a total area of 2,716.2 sq. kms. Of this, the total area of the district under wetlands/swamps is 1,147.4 sq. kms; 294.4 sq. kms. being permanent wetland while 853 sq. kms. being seasonal wetlands. Oyam has a population of over 268,414.

The district has seven sub counties of Aber, Loro, Acaba, Minakulu, Ngai, Iceme and Otwal with one town council, i.e Oyam Town Council. Oyam is further sub-divided into 43 parishes, 897 villages/cells. The Administration Headquarters is located at Anyeke in Oyam Town Council, 14 km. off Kampala Road from Loro.

EDUCATION AND SPORTS

• Under structural development, classrooms have constructed at Ajaga, Kongo and Acimi Primary Schools in Minakulu Sub County.
• The United Nation Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development, French based humanitarian organizations are constructing classroom blocks, 12 new staff accommodation for teachers at Zambia, Oyoe, Aber, Acaba, Obangangeo, Barmwony, Adyigi and Loro primary schools.
• Under Functional Adult Literacy Programme (FAL) the district has raised the literacy level up to 87%. However, most of those attending FAL classes are female as opposed to male.

• Universal Secondary Education is operational in nine government aided secondary schools and three private secondary schools.
