Education
There are 54 primary schools, 10 community schools and five secondary schools in the district. Primary school enrolment stands at slightly over 25,317 pupils and secondary school enrolment at 1152 students.
Under the School Facility Grant (SFG), new school buildings have been erected and furniture supplied. There is high demand for trained teachers in the district at both primary and secondary levels.
Secondary schools include Arengesiep SS, Pokot SS and Namalu SS Nakapiriprit Seed Secondary school and St Kizito Secondary School. All of them lack science laboratories and science teachers. Arengesiep SS recorded the worst O-level results in the whole country in 2003.
Nakapiripirit suffers from a shortage of teachers, particularly qualified teachers. The teachers move long distances from their residences to the schools, most of which lack housing facilities for their staff. The teachers are poorly remunerated, many of them are not on the payroll of the Ministry of Education.
In the past girls in Nakapiripirit and much of the Karamoja region rarely went to school as they were groomed to be married off at an early age. But owing to efforts of local leaders and NGOs this culture is dying away and more girls are going to school.
Even boys who in the past would have been left out of school so as to look after cows are now attending classes, especially since the Universal Primary Education programme was introduced.
