MPIGI DISTRICT

Mpigi District is a district in Central Uganda. Like other most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Mpigi.

Mpigi District is bordered by Wakiso District to the north and east, Kalangala District to the south,Kalungu District to the southwest, Butambala Districtto the west and Mityana District to the northwest. The town of Mpigi, where the district headquarters are located, lies approximately 37 kilometres (23 mi), by road, west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the district are:00 14N, 32 20E.

At Independence in 1962, Mpigi was part of Buganda Kingdom. Following the abolition of kingdoms in 1967, Buganda was divided into 4 districts-East Mengo, West Mengo, Mubende and Masaka districts. Under the 1974 provincial Administration, West Mengo became Mengo District, which in 1980 became Mpigi District. In 2000, Busiro and Kyadondo counties and Entebbe Municipality were separated from it to create Wakiso District.

POPULATION: The district has over 414,757 people, 206,012 of which are females and 208,745 are males.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES: The major economic activity in Mpigi district is Agriculture with food crops like Sweet potatoes, Beans, Cassava, Maize, Bananas, ground nuts etc. Cash crops include coffee and cotton. More so fruits and vegetables like Tomatoes, Onions and cabbage are grown in the Mpigi.

HEALTH SERVICES: It has 17 Government dispensaries (II), 13 Government health centres (III), 4 private dispensaries, 24 clinics. It also has a Government hospital in Gombe with 104 beds and Entebbe Hospital with 147 beds. Uganda catholic Medical Bureau Kisubi with 74 beds and Nkozi hospital with 90 beds.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: Mpanga Forest Reserve is an hour’s drive from Kampala. This is excellent for a day trip an the main attractions are; mighty trees with the knotted roots, monkeys, birds, butterflies, snakes though some are dangerous,.

EDUCATION SERVICES

It has a total of 324 primary schools with 246 government, 57 private and 21 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 37 schools, 16 are government, 10 private and 11 community. It also has 3 technical institutions, 3 teacher training colleges and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi.

Background

Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) is an educational forum founded by teachers and authors of textbooks for Secondary schools.

The agency started in 2000 by few teachers of St. Mary’s College Kisubi. It has expanded to include most teachers from other prominent schools in Uganda. The management is made up of highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

The founders, through their research, discovered that lack of text books in most schools in Uganda has contributed to poor performance. There is uneven distribution of books as they are concentrated in urban areas. Some books are out dated, expensive or inappropriate.

Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) has promoted the publication of high quality text books for Ugandan schools. The agency was registered as a CBO in 2006 with the main aim of publishing and supplying at an affordable cost educational books and other scholastic materials suitable for the Ugandan demand and environment. This was after realising the gap between the books published by multinational publishers for the African child and the actual needs of the local demands.

KAWA was started by Moses Wamanga, formerly senior teacher and Head of Political Education Department at SMACK together with Peter Matsanga, the Head of Geography department in the same school. Other senior team leaders are Kenneth Katonda, Odong Apalokwang, Richard Chole, Fridah Nabahwana and Ann Matsanga.

Objectives

There are two major goals for the reading culture project and specific objectives within each of the goals.

Goal # 1 – To empower schools, teachers, students and parents realize their potential to achieve their set objectives in the education system.

· To improve teachers’ skills in managing books, promoting reading and teaching methods.

· To assist parents/guardians in the community in learning how to effectively apply their educational information in helping their young children to be more dedicated to their books.

· To assist the parents in the community how to evaluate changes in the education of their young children.

· To bridge the gap in performance between the rural and Urban Schools.

· To help the experienced teachers and community members to write books and have them published.

Goal # 2 – To effectively partner with Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) as

volunteers in helping students to develop a reading culture and research capability.

· To recruit a group of under graduate students (15-20 students each semester) from Secondary Schools and the Universities to become volunteers in KAWA project.

· To provide a 4 week training program for the volunteers that will cover

§ Basic educational information for guardians and

§ Information on forming and managing a local area library/telecentre.

· To place the students in the KAWA Agency to offer tutoring services to the Community.
