KASESE DISTRICT

Kasese District is located along the Equator. It is bordered by Kabarole District to the north,Kamwenge District to the east, Rubirizi District to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congoto the west. The district headquarters at Kaseseare located approximately 359 kilometres (223 mi), by road, west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the district are:00 11N, 30 05E.

The district has a total land area of 2,724 square kilometres (1,052 sq mi), of which 885 square kilometres (342 sq mi) is reserved for Queen Elizabeth National Park and 652 square kilometres (252 sq mi) for Rwenzori Mountains National Park, leaving 1,187 square kilometres (458 sq mi) for human habitation and economic utilization. Kasese District is part of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, which is coterminus with the Rwenzururu sub-region, home to an estimated 750,000 inhabitants in 2002, according to the national census conducted that year. The sub region consists of Bundibugyo District, Ntoroko District and Kasese District.

The 2002 national census put the population of the district at approximately 533,000. Kasese is a multi-ethnic district with many people of different ethnic backgrounds. The main languages and ethnic groups that dominate the area are Rutooro and Rukonjo, the languages of the Batooro and the Bakonjo people respectively. However, there are other ethnic groups in the district who include the Banyankole, the Basongora and the Bakiga. There is also common usage of English, Swahiliand Luganda. It is estimated that in 2010, the population of the district is approximately 649,400.

Background

Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) is an educational forum founded by teachers and authors of textbooks for Secondary schools.

The agency started in 2000 by few teachers of St. Mary’s College Kisubi. It has expanded to include most teachers from other prominent schools in Uganda. The management is made up of highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

The founders, through their research, discovered that lack of text books in most schools in Uganda has contributed to poor performance. There is uneven distribution of books as they are concentrated in urban areas. Some books are out dated, expensive or inappropriate.

Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) has promoted the publication of high quality text books for Ugandan schools. The agency was registered as a CBO in 2006 with the main aim of publishing and supplying at an affordable cost educational books and other scholastic materials suitable for the Ugandan demand and environment. This was after realising the gap between the books published by multinational publishers for the African child and the actual needs of the local demands.

KAWA was started by Moses Wamanga, formerly senior teacher and Head of Political Education Department at SMACK together with Peter Matsanga, the Head of Geography department in the same school. Other senior team leaders are Kenneth Katonda, Odong Apalokwang, Richard Chole, Fridah Nabahwana and Ann Matsanga.

Objectives

There are two major goals for the reading culture project and specific objectives within each of the goals.

Goal # 1 – To empower schools, teachers, students and parents realize their potential to achieve their set objectives in the education system.

· To improve teachers’ skills in managing books, promoting reading and teaching methods.

· To assist parents/guardians in the community in learning how to effectively apply their educational information in helping their young children to be more dedicated to their books.

· To assist the parents in the community how to evaluate changes in the education of their young children.

· To bridge the gap in performance between the rural and Urban Schools.

· To help the experienced teachers and community members to write books and have them published.

Goal # 2 – To effectively partner with Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) as

volunteers in helping students to develop a reading culture and research capability.

· To recruit a group of under graduate students (15-20 students each semester) from Secondary Schools and the Universities to become volunteers in KAWA project.

· To provide a 4 week training program for the volunteers that will cover

§ Basic educational information for guardians and

§ Information on forming and managing a local area library/telecentre.

· To place the students in the KAWA Agency to offer tutoring services to the Community.
