How to Create School Mission, vision and Values
The mission statement describes why the school exists and who are the main beneficiaries. The vision describes the future idea, what it could become.

A clear mission and vision can help to focus the efforts of everyone involved. A school without a mission is like a bus with passengers but without direction.

Decisions made by individuals about priorities are underpinned by their values, those things they have a passionate belief in. It is possible that different stakeholders will attach importance to different values. However, it is important to identify the values that are shared because they will underpin key decisions in each school.

Here are some examples.
  • Everyone deserves respect
  • Cultural and religious diversity should be recognised and respected
  • high standards should be promoted for all the activities of the school
  • School should be a safe and happy place, condusive for teaching and learning
  • Integrity and courage should be fostered
  • Opportunities for leadership should exist at all levels
  • Students have rights and responsibilities
  • Parents are partners in the education of their children
  • Tolerance, truth, justice and transparency should be actively promoted

The following issues concern students most and should be provided for:
  • Freedom of speech
  • Equality
  • Agood learning environment
  • Teaching and learning materials
  • Safe classrooms with furniture
  • Good teachers
  • Guidance and counselling
  • Opportunities for interaction
  • Games and sports and other co-curricular activities
  • Good sanitation
  • A balanced diet
  • Sex education
